革命機ヴアルヴレイヴEpisode 1 Review

Just finished the 1st episode of this new anime. Here’s some spoilers, but mainly my opinion of the show based on this episode. The creators might surprise me with subsequent episodes, but this is just purely my current opinion and is subject to changes. Forgive me for constantly drawing parallels to previous Gundam series. So for a start, there’s space colony(as expected for most mecha shows). The protagonist, Haruto, is a peace-loving civilian(Kira Yamato?). The antagonist carries out operation to steal the Valvrave(Athrun Zala?) but failed. The made the protagonist’s crush die so as to inject hatred in Haruto, giving him a strong reason and resolution to fight(Shin Asuka?). Giving up as a human being was a pleasant surprise, means maybe he’s gonna have berserk mode or something demon-like(SEED mode?). The mech’s moves ain’t bad, but I can’t see clearly how the arms move. The colour of the slashes were planned nicely, I must say. It’s that of rose petals(befitting for the opening song, Preserved Roses). Then, it ended of the battle with a few sword slashes(though I expected clean cut like Exia’s GN Sword). Spoilers aside, here’s what I think should be expected.

  1. A change in Haruto’s mech in the middle of the story(all heroes need a godly machine to end it all)
  2. Funnels/DRAGOONS/Fangs(these remotely-controlled weapons are a must have because they demonstrate the pilot’s spacial awareness capability)
  3. Supernatural powers similar to the Geass in Code Geass(the final part already depicted Haruto as something undead, like a vampire)
  4. Sword battles(a must have! Swords have played a significant role in Japan’s culture and history. Plus, swords truly display the pilots combat abilities:))

Can’t remember all the expectations I brainstormed, so will update again when I regain my memories. Let’s patiently wait for the next episode. Oyasumi~
